Last year, I went for a trek in beautiful Nepal with my cousin Ingrid. We decided to carry our backpacks (without hiring porters) during the whole 8-day experience. Although this was only my second time trekking, I knew one thing for sure: the backpack should be as light as possible! I had learned this the hard way on the Camino del Norte in Spain. After tens of kilometers up and and down the mountains, every 100g counts.
I also like organizing and not having to unpack everything to find my night kit or my toothbrush.
So, one by one, I designed and printed my travel essentials. I designed with these constraints in mind:
the whole kit must weigh less than 100g ✅
the items need to be easy to find in the backpack, which I needed a variety of colors and sizes (fit-for-purpose) 🎨
everything needs to be hygienic and easy to clean 🪥
Because of the season, weather and our fitness level, we chose to hike to Anapurna Base Camp
Those feet need to be treated with care and respect - every 100g of backpack weight counts!
I also loved visiting colorful and spiritual Boudanath
The first item I designed was a toothbrush holder that doubles as a carrying case. It needs to be useful both when staying in the same place for a few days at a time, and on the go:
🛌 in Hotel mode: The brush stands straight in the holder to avoid contact with surfaces and to dry
🛄 in Travel mode: The brush is protected inside the case
After a few utilisations, I realized that the bottom would not be easy to clean. So I made a new iteration where the bottom part (yellow on the picture) can be unscrewed to clean up more easily.
I am still in search of the perfect soap box design. It should be watertight, it should have a system to keep the soap dry (both when closed, and when staying at a hotel), it should be easy to clean,...
This is not yet the perfect soap box, but this is a step in the right direction. Some of the features are already present in this ietration. For instance, I designed a tray that protects the soap inside the box and that can also be used standalone:
🛌 in Hotel mode: the soap stays dry and hygienic without contact with the surfaces of the sink/shower/bathtub
🛄 in Travel mode: there is less chance that the bar turns into a gooey jelly
I have printed with tight tolerances for the lid and I didn't want to overcomplicate the design, so it should not leak, but I haven't tested extensively.
I also created smaller boxes to transport:
my sleeping essentials (ear plugs + sleep mask)
vitamins, supplements or dry toothpaste
jewelry
These are quite versatile. As with everything 3d printed, they are easy to customize with colors or letters or drawings.
Surrounded by natural beauty and traversing lovely villages
Our own of course, but also those of thousands who shaped the steps and paved the way
From the influence of Buddhism in everyday life
I have been using them for over two years now both at home and on the road, I love them! However, there are two main things that I would improve upon:
I really like the toothbrush 2-in-1 capability but the "case" mode (when the toothbrush is inside the case) is not universal. It works with the brand of toothbrush that I use and that is rather thin, but it doesn't work on all brands
I am not 100% sure that the soap holder is water-tight
